Correction:  An earlier version of this story stated that the baler is owned and operated by Talkeetna Recycling Works.  Ownership of the baler has been transferred to the Mat-Su Borough.

A long-anticipated goal has been realized at the Talkeetna transfer station. After years of discussion and paperwork, the cardboard baler is online. Talkeetna Recycling Works of the Talkeetna Community Council, Inc. and the Mat-Su Borough teamed together on this project with the main objective to re-purpose cardboard while keeping it out of the landfill. Though reaching a final agreement between the borough and the TRW was complex, both Mat-Su Solid Division Waste Manager, Butch Shapiro and chair Brenda Walsh of Talkeetna Recycling Works, applaud the widespread community effort to create the space for the baler.

On Thursday, recycling volunteers were trained on use and safety of the cardboard baler, which is owned and maintained by the Mat-Su Borough.
