An Anchorage man died after his snowcat fell through the ice near Skwentna last Friday, according to Alaska State Troopers.
Scott Gagne of Anchorage was on Hewitt Lake when his snowcat went through the ice. Troopers received the initial call around 4:30 pm. That evening, an air rescue team reached the area, and saw the snowcat underwater, but did not see any signs of Gagne in or around it.
Troopers and volunteers from the Alaska Dive Search and Rescue Team tried to reach the lake on Saturday, but were turned back by bad weather. On Sunday, with help from the Alaska Air National Guard, the dive team and Troopers reached the lake and were able to recover Gagne’s body.
