Talkeetna-based musher Anja Radano is the first to scratch from the 2022 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

According to a statement from the Iditarod Wednesday night, Radano made the decision to scratch at the Nikolai checkpoint.  She has completed the Iditarod twice, in 2018 and 2019.

The announcement of Radano’s scratching notes that she did so in the best interest of her team, but does not give a specific reason.

Accounts from multiple mushers have described the trail from Rohn to Nikolai as particularly difficult this year.
