Mat-Su Education Association Authorizes Strike Vote

Members of the Mat-Su Education Association will vote this week on whether to declare a strike.  MSEA and the Mat-Su Borough School District have been involved in contract negotiations for months. In recent weeks, teachers have attended school board meetings to share their displeasure with the district’s plan to change health insurance providers in the new contract.

In the statement authorizing the strike vote, MSEA says the district has stopped negotiating and has given their final contract offer.  MSEA President Vicki Hewitt says, “All members of MSEA want to be in classrooms teaching their students. However, until the district comes back to the table, and addresses our concerns, we will move forward with our job action preparations for next school year.”

The strike vote will begin on Wednesday, and ballots will be collected and counted on Friday, the last day of school for students.
