While the weather has been relatively sunny in recent days, and more clear skies are expected, views in the Northern Susitna Valley are more obscured than usual.
According to the National Weather Service office in Anchorage, that’s due to haze and smoke from Canadian wildfires. According to the National Weather Service, winds from the east have begun to blow the haze across Southcentral Alaska. Over the weekend, the haze moved into the state about as far as the Copper River Basin. By Monday, it had moved further into Alaska.
The current haze is not related to local fires, and the Northern Valley is not currently under a fire weather watch. Other areas of the state are experiencing hot, dry weather that could lead to wildfires. As of Monday, burn permits had been suspended in the areas of Delta, Tok, Valdez, and the Copper River.
Thus far in 2023, only two wildland fires are listed in the Mat-Su Borough. Both are located east of Palmer.
