Three thousand tons of riprap is on its way to Downtown Talkeetna, according to the Mat-Su Borough.
In a statement issued Thursday, the borough says the large stones will be trucked to the end of Main Street starting Friday for emergency repairs to the Talkeetna revetment. The hauling is expected to take ten days, with about eight trucks arriving each day.
Repair work on the revetment, which was damaged by high water in late August and early September, is scheduled to begin no later than October 3rd. The temporary repairs are expected to be complete by mid-October. The emergency repairs are expected to cost about half-a-million dollars. According to Thursday’s statement, the borough will seek reimbursement for the repair and resources for a long-term solution from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The borough declared the 350 feet of revetment that was destroyed and the resulting erosion as a local disaster. That disaster declaration will last through the end of October.
