Planning Commission Recommends CIPs

The Mat-Su Borough Planning Commission discussed Capital Improvement Program projects, or C-I-Ps, at their meeting this week. One project in Talkeetna is recommended for funding in next year’s budget.

Borough Planning and Land Use Director Alex Strawn said during the meeting that the Assembly provides about $500,000 per year for the Capital Improvement Program. It’s a list of projects that would be funded within the next six years. The top 12 projects of 23 are considered priority for this round.

The Whigmi Trailhead restroom in Talkeetna is listed as number four and is the only project proposed in the Upper Valley. According to Borough Recreation Specialist Brian Robison, Whigmi is one of the most consistently busy trailheads in winter. And it will repurpose the old vault toilets from Talkeetna’s Village Park.

With a proposed budget of $100,000, the funding will provide restroom facilities for the Talkeetna Lakes recreation area. Robison says preliminary site planning has been completed, but there has been nothing beyond that. He says the old vault toilets need a lot of work to get them refurbished. And there will need to be significant site prep at the trailhead before the toilets can be installed.

Recommendations will move to the Assembly for their final approval and prioritization.
