A Place Among Giants

A book release event for the new memoir, A Place Among Giants, was held at the Flying Squirrel Bakery last Sunday. Author, Lisa Roderick, was on hand to sign books and answer questions. A Place Among Giants recalls Roderick’s many years on the Kahiltna Glacier. There, she served as Base Camp Manager for mountain climbers on Denali.

Roderick said she began writing journal entries at base camp, putting into words the harrowing events she lived and witnessed as part of her job. Then in 2016, Alpinist Magazine published an article about her first season on the glacier. The success of that article became the motivation for completing her memoir.

Multiple stories from the book were read aloud at the event. One passage was read by a member of the Strawn family. The reading focused on a tragedy that happened on Mount Foraker in 2002, where an avalanche claimed three of the Strawn brothers’ lives. Strawn went on to say that her family is still climbing mountains, and that Roderick’s written tribute to her brothers is very meaningful to her family.

Roderick’s next book signing appearance will take place February 22nd, in Anchorage, at Title Wave Books.
