Mobile recycling will return to Talkeetna this summer, with a few updates. Last summer was the first season the Talkeetna Recycling Committee attempted the pick-up program. Talkeetna Recycling Committee Chair Cici Schoenberger says it’s still in the pilot phase.
While last year’s program included cardboard pick-up Schoenberger says the volume was too much for the volunteers to handle. But, she says, they will pick up plastic bottles, steel and aluminum cans, and paper.
Schoenberger hopes the group can expand this summer to include people in the downtown area that can’t get to the transfer site. The group is reaching out to businesses and others who might need the service so they can figure out routing and pickup days.
Pricing will also change this year. Each 33-gallon sized trash bag will cost $3 and 50-gallon contractor-sized bags will cost $5. Pickups with five or more bags get a 20% discount.
Cardboard was popular last year, but Schoenberger says businesses can be trained to process their own at the transfer site if they choose. Once trained, they can bring it on Fridays at a designated time. And recycling will remain open and free at the transfer site on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
Schoenberger says anyone interested in mobile recycling can email the group at recycling@talkeetnacouncil.org.
