Trash Coupons Are Available Now

According to Mat-Su Borough Solid Waste Division Manager Jeff Smith, spring marks the beginning of the busy season at the landfill and transfer stations. And keeping the Borough clean is the goal of the trash coupons offered to homeowners.

“The idea is just to clean up your yard, get your spring cleaning done, get those things out of the places that you need to have and maybe got saved up over the winter. Maybe you’re getting rid of an old shed or something like that so that’s the type of thing this is really designed for.”

Similar to last year’s setup, Mat-Su Borough residents may register for a landfill coupon worth $25. Each household can register for a single coupon and it can only be used for a single load. But there is a caveat.

“But you only get one property so if you own multiple properties, you only get one coupon to your primary residence.”

Smith says the coupons can only be used at the Central Landfill and managed transfer sites. That includes the Talkeetna and Willow transfer sites, but not Trapper Creek.

The coupons can be used for anything the Borough accepts at the Landfill and those transfer sites.

“Make sure you load up your car, your truck, your trailer whatever you got. Get a full load out of it so you can get the full value of the $25. It’s a one-time use only. But keep in mind, don’t bring your metal at the same time because your metal is free. So take that at a separate time and that way you won’t have the weight of the metal coming in with your mixed load.”

Borough property owners can apply for the coupon online. But registrations must be received by May 31st. Smith says coupons will be valid through March 31st next year.
