  • Skatepark Working Meeting

    The Talkeetna Skatepark Committee is meeting on July 2nd at 7pm at Denali Education Center. This will be a working meeting to reach out to sponsors, create a fundraising thermometer to display the progress at the park, and brainstorm ways to raise funds for the skatepark. Anyone who wants to participate is welcome.

    The Talkeetna Public Library's Summer Reading Program is on Thursdays. This Thursday has the following activities.

    Storytime begins at 11am with a program by Alaska Wildbird Rehabilitation group. After Lunch on the Lawn, there will be another bird from the Wildbirds group beginning at 12:45. Following that, all are welcome to stay and have fun with Sharon and her amazing bioluminescent dinoflagellates!

    “Making the Audible Visible” Painting Class – Denali Arts Council

    Sheldon Community Arts Hangar

    Denali Arts Council is offering a two-day improvisational "Live Art" painting workshop with Denise Iacovone (“E-ya-ka-vone-ay”).  The “Making the Audible Visible” Painting Class focuses on improvisational art and runs in conjunction with the Talkeetna Jazz Workshop. The first meeting takes place during the jazz workshop dress rehearsal on Thursday July 3rd from 4:30-7:30pm. The second meeting is at the final concert on Saturday July 5th from 6 to 8:30pm.   • Resilient Earth, Resilient Communities Traveling Exhibit – Denali Education Center

    The Denali Education Center and the NSF National Center for Atmospheric Research present a traveling exhibit about Earth system science at Susitna Hall, in Talkeetna. The Resilient Earth, Resilient Communities Exhibit is on display Monday through Friday, 10 am until 5 pm, through July 4th.     Talkeetna's 4th of July Parade meanders down Main Street in downtown Talkeetna, beginning at Denali Education Center at 12pm.

  • Willow 4th of July Parade & Celebration

    Willow Community Center

    The Willow Area Community Organization (WACO) hosts Willow's 4th of July Parade and Celebration this Friday. The parade starts at the First Baptist Church at noon and travels to the Willow Community Center. Following the parade is a celebration at the Community Center; there will be a contest for the most patriotic outfit and a community BBQ beginning at 1:30pm.     Denali Arts Council and Talkeetna Chamber of Commerce host Live at Five, a family friendly music event at the Talkeetna Village Park, on Fridays at 5pm, rain or shine. The band this week is Denali Cooks.

  • Jazz Concert – Denali Arts Council

    Sheldon Community Arts Hangar

    Denali Arts Council hosts a Jazz Concert with Maestro Rocco John Iacovone (“E-ya-ka-vone-ay”) at the Sheldon Community Arts Hangar. Rocco's Jazz Workshop attendees present their final performance with special musical guests, Joel Mosier and Steve Durr. Additionally, led by Denise Iacovone, painters from the Making the Audible Visible workshop will be on stage painting during the performance. Doors open at 6:30pm and the music starts at 7.

    The Talkeetna Public Library's Summer Reading Program is on Thursdays until August 7th, with the following activities:

    • Storytime for ages 0-7 begins 11am with a snack, stories, and a craft. The theme this week is Rock Painting and the kids will begin to make a William Snakespeare rock sculpture.
    • Lunch on the Lawn for all ages up to 18 is at 12pm.
    • The Summer Reading Program for all ages begins at 1pm. Elaborate rock painting is the activity, and the kids will have a chance to add to the rock-snake sculpture.
    • Reading logs may be turned in at the front desk on Thursdays.

  • Alaska Division of Forestry burn permit suspension

    The Alaska Division of Forestry has a burn permit suspension in effect for the Mat-Su Borough. A burn permit suspension means no burning of burn barrels, debris piles, or lawn burns. Campfires smaller than 3ft in diameter for the purpose of warming, cooking, or signaling are still allowed. Adequate clearance away from combustibles and attendance until cold to the touch are still required for campfires. Any approved fire, even a small one should be undertaken with extreme caution and vigilance at this time of year. Follow the link in the announcement on ktna.org for more information.

    Green Light Circus – Denali Arts Council

    This Friday and Saturday, July 11th and 12th Denali Arts Council hosts the Green Light Circus's performances - The Time loop Troupe! This year, the circus is traveling through TIME. Expect gravity-defying acts, daring stunts, and time-bending surprises as local kids tumble through the ages. Doors open at 6pm and the show starts at 7pm. Tickets are only available at the door.


    As part of the Green light Circus festivities, there will be a Fairway Carnival on Saturday, July 12th outside the Sheldon Community Arts Hangar from 12 to 4pm. This is a family friendly event with face painting, balloon animals, carnival games, magic shows, a dunk tank and more. Learn more at denaliartscouncil.org.
