The Annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count begins on December 30th. This is a fun citizen science project that relies on volunteers to collect information on bird populations. There are two options for people to participate- either as a field counter or if you have a bird feeder set up, you can count birds from the comfort of your home. They remind you to plan ahead for prescriptions, appointments and care needs. Due to extreme cold temperatures, the Alaska Railroad will NOT be running the normally scheduled Aurora Winter Train this weekend. To accommodate residents who use the Flag Stop Railroad, they will run an additional Hurricane Turn Train on Saturday, January 3rd at its normally scheduled time, northbound from Talkeetna at 11:25am. There will be NO Trains heading south on Sunday. The Susitna Community Council meets on Thursday, January 1st at the Upper Susitna Community & Senior Center at 7 pm. Denali Arts Council hosts Ice Carving Workshops, taught by Tommy Salami. An adult and youth workshop on Saturday, January 3rd outside the Sheldon Community Arts Hangar. Tommy will instruct participants on carving techniques on 10lb blocks of ice. This is a great way to learn how to carve before the Ice Carving Competition. Supplies will be provided, and you can take your carving home with you. Register online at denaliartscouncil.org. Talkeetna Elementary is seeking a coach to lead their 3rd–5th grade soccer program March 17 through May 7th, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-4:30pm. Coach teaches basic skills and holds scrimmages, no travel for games required. Applicants must be able to communicate effectively with participants and families, complete MSBSD coach requirements, including application, fingerprinting, and background check at the Administration Bldg. in Palmer. Talkeetna Fire Department is partnering with the Alaska State Fire Marshals Office to offer home smoke alarm installations to the community. They are offering this service through January. MUTT (Multi Users of Talkeetna Trails) is hosting the 3rd Annual Rich Crain Classic on January 31st at the Comsat trailhead of Talkeetna Lakes Park, beginning at 11am. Participants can choose to skijor, bikejor, ski, mush, kick sled or run and may use 1 human, 1 dog or 2 dog power to follow a 5 or 15 km marked trail.
