Nuggets--Birding adventures

Host Deborah Brocke talks a little about why early spring is the best time to see the most species in the Upper Susitna Valley, then talks to guests Barbara and Chris Mannix about their recent birding trip in Texas, which yielded twenty-some species of warblers, a trogon, and quite a list of rails during a “rail walk”. Their birding adventures yielded over 60 life birds. We also hear from Robert Ambrose, who recently spent some time in the Bering Sea as a bird spotter on the Healy, a Coast Guard icebreaker with a scientific mission. He became quite familiar with various species of gulls, and saw albatrosses. The crew also had some surprises like a fork-tailed storm petrel, and a McKay’s bunting, which stayed on board the ship for six days.
