A fresh look at the Historical Society

There’s a new look at Talkeetna’s history museum. The Historical Society is having an open house to show it off. KTNA’s Lorien Nettleton Has more:

When Jayme Spires started her new position as Historic Sites Manager for the Talkeetna Historical Society, she started having some ideas about re-arranging. As a lifelong Talkeetna resident, she had been around the museum her whole life and had even worked at the Museum when she was in Junior High.

After the busy summer season died down, she set to work re-arranging the spaces to improve flow and make the displays more accessible. She uncovered rooms full of historical items that had not been displayed, and set to work organizing the museums buildings by time-period.

The Historical Society is having an Open House on Saturday, December 1st, and the public is invited to come have a look at the new lay-out. Spires says the historical Society is looking for ways to make the Museum a place where locals might want to hang out to look through the archives, old photographs of Parades of days past, or even watch movies made by colorful characters of yesteryear on a display coming soon to a planned viewing room and lounge in the Museum. Spires says many of the movies give a glimpse in to some of the idiosyncrasies of Talkeetna-Town

At Saturday’s Open house, both Tracy Brown and Nancy Gates, authors of the new book “The Alaska Homesteader’s Handbook: Independent Living on the Last Frontier” will be on hand to do signings and talk about their homesteading expertise, as well as a few of the 44 contributors.
