There will be a presentation on Recycling in the Susitna Valley by Tam Boeve (bow-vee), executive director of Valley Community Recycling Solutions on Tuesday, October 28, 7 p.m. in the Willow Public Library meeting room. Topics include what you can recycle, why clean and sorted matters, where recyclables go and glass recycling in the area. Please bring your questions. All proceeds support the 5th Grade Coastal Ecology Field Trip to Kachemak Bay. Denali Arts Council hosts a Halloween concert with Blackwater Railroad at the Sheldon Community Arts Hangar on Friday, October 31st. This show is for all ages. There will also be a Costume Contest. If your primary residence is within the Council’s boundaries and you are eligible to vote in Borough elections, you can vote in this election. Voting is at the Talkeetna Public Library from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm. Maps and eligibility requirements are available to examine at the Library. Candidate bios are posted on the website talkeetnacouncil.org. Today is voting for the MatSu Borough elections. The voting locations in the Upper Susitna Valley are the Talkeetna Public Library and the Trapper Creek Public Library. The polls are open on Election Day from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Information on Ballot Propositions and on candidates running for the assembly and the school board is available on the borough website. Talkeetna Public Library's Reading Mentors program is on Tuesdays at 3:15pm. This program is for 1st through 3rd graders and is designed to help new readers get experience and confidence in reading out loud. Time to sign up is running out. | 3 events, - The Denali Nordic Ski Club is holding its annual membership and election meeting on Thursday, November 6th from 5 to 7:30 pm at the Sheldon Community Arts Hanger. They are kicking off the ski season with food, drinks, and updates on what's ahead this year. There will be a board member election, membership renewal and information on upcoming volunteer opportunities. All are welcome. Attendees can bring gear for an opportunity to buy/sell/swap ski gear. She will be presenting two of her books: Lookout - her first novel, and Dirt Work: An Education in the Woods - a finalist for a Willa Award in nonfiction. The hosts are Scott Sanford, an emeritus distinguished outreach specialist for the Rural Energy Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Art Nash, UAF Cooperative Extension Service energy specialist. These workshops will explore how to prolong the freshness of produce, examine commercial and residential energy options for greenhouses, and discuss accessibility modifications for farmers and gardeners with disabilities. All are welcome. - The Willow Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is hosting Stop the Bleed classes at the Willow Community Center on Saturday, November 22nd. The Upper Susitna Food Pantry will be closed Friday, November 21st to prepare for the Thanksgiving Blessing distribution. Denali Arts Council hosts Parlor in the Round, a songwriter gameshow with a twist, featuring Talkeetna's own Steve Durr, as well as internationally acclaimed musicians.
