The Upper Susitna Seniors hosts three introductory 1-hour sessions for an upcoming Depression & Anxiety Recovery Program at the Upper Susitna Community and Senior Center. Those interested can choose to attend one of the following dates: Saturday, December 6th at 4pm, Sunday, December 7th at 2pm, or Monday, December 8th at 6pm. The Depression & Anxiety Recovery Program begins in January, pre-registration will be available for those who feel this program is a good fit for them. The Mat-Su Library Board of Directors meets on Tuesday, December 9th at 1pm, in Big Lake. Zoom participation will be available at the Talkeetna Public Library. The Talkeetna Recycling Committee will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, December 9th, at 4:30PM, via Zoom. Anyone interested in recycling is welcome to attend. The Susitna River Coalition is working in partnership with Alaska Safe Riders to host a Backcountry & Ice Travel Safety Presentation on Tuesday, December 9th at 6pm at the Upper Susitna Senior Center. This is an educational presentation on safe travel in backcountry and ice conditions for snowmachines. The session will include information on recognizing signs of weak or unsafe ice, recommended safety equipment, and response steps in the event of a breakthrough. On Wednesday, December 10th from 6-9PM, the Susitna River Coalition is hosting an evening of film and community conversation at the Talkeetna Roadhouse. This year’s feature is Blue Heart, Patagonia’s documentary about the last wild rivers of the Balkans and the grassroots efforts to protect them from large hydropower development. Following the short film, SRC will share a presentation and updates on current projects and a look ahead to 2026. Snacks and drinks will be available. All are welcome to attend. |

Denali Arts Council hosts their annual Quilt Show at the Sheldon Community Arts Hangar on Saturday, December 13th from 4 to 6pm. If you are interested in submitting a quilt, the deadline is Wednesday, December 10th. Learn more at denaliartscouncil.org. Talkeetna Elementary School is hosting an online silent auction fundraiser to benefit 4th and 5th grade educational field trips to Kachemak Bay in Homer and to Denali National Park. Talkeetna Public Library hosts the next Tween Page to Screen program on Saturday, December 13th. This month will feature the book, The Seeker, by Susan Cooper. Tweens ages 9 to 12 will enjoy snacks, discuss the book and watch the movie. The program is from 5 to 7pm. Next months selection is, Holes, by Luis Sachar and will be handed out after the movie. |

Denali Arts Council hosts a Matinee of the performance, Laughing All the Way to the Brink, at the Sheldon Community Arts Hangar on Sunday, December 14th. This theatrical event is part of the Climate Theater Festival and will feature seven short plays by playwrights from around the world. While climate change is very serious, most of these plays are very not. Doors open at 2:30, and the performance is at 3pm. Donations are welcome, proceeds raised will go to the Susitna River Coalition. Learn more at denaliartscouncil.org. The Mat-Su Jewish Center Chabad hosts a community Chanukah celebration at the Upper Susitna Community and Senior Center on Sunday, December 14th at 3:30pm. The nonprofit organization SalmonState is hosting a screening of the film Ocean with David Attenborough on Monday, December 15th at 6:30pm at the Sheldon Community Arts Hangar. The meeting is on Thursday, December 18th from 6:30-7:30pm at the Talkeetna Public Library. This meeting is an opportunity for residents, permit applicants, and other interested parties to share input on long-term guidelines and concerns related to commercial use in the park. Denali Arts Council hosts Holiday in Whoville's Interactive Dramatic Reading of the Grinch Stories at the Sheldon Community Arts Hangar on Friday and Saturday, December 19th and 20th. Upper Susitna Seniors host Breakfast with Santa at the Upper Susitna Community and Senior Center on Saturday, December 20th from 10:00 to 11:30am. All are welcome to enjoy breakfast, Santa will be there with gifts for kids. You may call (907)733-6200 for more information. The Denali Nordic Ski Club hosts a Solstice Stroll on Saturday, December 20th at 6 pm. There might not be enough snow to ski but that is not stopping them from celebrating Solstice. All are invited to meet at Whigmi trail head, there will be hot drinks and a fire. Please bring your own chair. The Talkeetna Library’s Teen Book to Movie program this month is featuring the book and movie, I am Number Four, written by Pattacus Lore. The program is on Saturday, December 20th, beginning at 6pm. Teens ages 13-18 are welcome, pizza and snacks will be served. January’s book, The Hunger Games: Ballads of Songbirds and Snakes, will be available to take home and read. |

This is for those who are 65 years or older and don’t have dental insurance, you can learn more about affordable dental care opportunities by calling 907-376-2273. Denali Arts Council hosts a showing of Elf, a family-friendly holiday comedy starring Will Ferrell, about a boy raised by Santa who returns to the land of humans. The movie starts at 6pm at the Sheldon Community Arts Hangar on Monday, December 22nd. Feel free to wear your Christmas PJs or your best elf suit, you can bring sleeping bags and pillows and get ready to cozy up. Concessions will be open. |

Due to extreme cold temperatures, the Alaska Railroad will NOT be running the normally scheduled Aurora Winter Train this weekend. To accommodate residents who use the Flag Stop Railroad, they will run an additional Hurricane Turn Train on Saturday, January 3rd at its normally scheduled time, northbound from Talkeetna at 11:25am. There will be NO Trains heading south on Sunday. The Susitna Community Council meets on Thursday, January 1st at the Upper Susitna Community & Senior Center at 7 pm. Denali Arts Council hosts Ice Carving Workshops, taught by Tommy Salami. An adult and youth workshop on Saturday, January 3rd outside the Sheldon Community Arts Hangar. Tommy will instruct participants on carving techniques on 10lb blocks of ice. This is a great way to learn how to carve before the Ice Carving Competition. Supplies will be provided, and you can take your carving home with you. Register online at denaliartscouncil.org. This film documents the experience of Steven Callahan, he recounts the night of February 4th, 1982, when a collision with a whale caused his boat to sink in the Atlantic Ocean.
