This cooking program is open to 4th and 5th graders and homeschool students are welcome. Transportation from Talkeetna Elementary School to the library will be provided by Sunshine Transit.     Thursdays begin at the Talkeetna Public Library at 10 AM with Strong Women exercise group. This program is followed by Storytime beginning at 11:15am with a snack, stories and a craft. The theme this week is Spiders Are Your friends. Halloween treat bags will be handed out at the end of the program, and there will be grab and go bags with the craft supplies included in the front entryway. All are welcome.     Talkeetna Elementary School is hosting the Annual Halloween & Harvest Carnival on Friday, October 31st, from 3:15 to 5:00 PM in the school gym. All are invited to wear costumes and enjoy games and food. Tickets for games and food can be purchased at the event or preordered online at schoolpay.com. All proceeds support the 5th Grade Coastal Ecology Field Trip to Kachemak Bay.

    Do you love Halloween but live in an area where you rarely get trick-or-treaters? You are invited to set up a station at the VFW on the grassy side of the parking lot for Trunk-or-Treat. Typically this involves setting up the back of a vehicle or a pop up tent, decorating it, and handing out treats. You may set up your station between 4 and 4:30pm on Friday, October 31st to prepare. The VFW typically sees the most trick or treaters between 4:30 and 7pm.

    Trunk-or-Treat will be held in the Willow Public Library parking lot on Halloween, October 31st, from 5:30-7:00 p.m. Community members are welcome to park your vehicle, decorate your trunk and pass out treats to youth who arrive to trick-or-treat. This event is sponsored by the Willow Public Library and questions may be directed to Julie at the Library, 907-861-7655.

    Denali Arts Council hosts a Halloween concert with Blackwater Railroad at the Sheldon Community Arts Hangar on Friday, October 31st. This show is for all ages.     Denali Arts Council is hosting a youth song lyrics writing competition. Competitors must be under 18 and use the prompt: Pumpkin Pancakes. The winning song will be performed live at the Parlor in the Round performance and the songwriter will receive a scholarship. The submission deadline is November 1st.     The Talkeetna Community Council holds its annual Board of Directors election today, Tuesday November 4th.  If your primary residence is within the Council’s boundaries and you are eligible to vote in Borough elections, you can vote in this election. Voting is at the Talkeetna Public Library from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm. Maps and eligibility requirements are available to examine at the Library. Candidate bios are posted on the website talkeetnacouncil.org.

    Today is voting for the MatSu Borough elections. The voting locations in the Upper Susitna Valley are the Talkeetna Public Library and the Trapper Creek Public Library. The polls are open on Election Day from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Information on Ballot Propositions and on candidates running for the assembly and the school board is available on the borough website.

  • From Glacier to Sea: A Journey Down the Susitna – Susitna River Coalition

    The Susitna River Coalition is hosting their first winter speaker event of the season on November 5th at 6PM on Zoom and Facebook Live.
    Researcher and adventurer Chris Dunn presents his 2012 expedition - the first known traverse of the Susitna River, traveling more than 310 miles from its glaciated headwaters in the Alaska Range to Cook Inlet. The expedition documented the river as a connected system from source to sea.
