Fire Season is Here

Mat-Su Borough Fire Departments have responded to more than 50 structure fires so far this year. Though none were in the Upper Valley, the fire season has begun.

The Borough Department of Emergency Services, or DES, reminds residents to properly dispose of smoking materials. Flower pots are not a good choice for those as the soil and dry plant material can catch on fire.

Woodstove and fireplace ashes should be placed in a fireproof container and set away from any structures. DES also warns to keep any sources of ignition, including heat lamps, away from the home. Vinyl and wood siding are quick to ignite so also set grills and griddles away from the home.

Now is also a good time to check smoke detectors. DES also encourages residents to create a defensible space around the home, clearing brush and debris that might ignite.

Talkeetna Fire Chief Eric Chappell says that fire season started April 1st. He reminds residents to get a burn permit for any fire that is larger than campfire size. Burn permits are required from April 1st through August 31st. Permits are available on the Department of Natural Resources website.
