Friday’s freezing rain caused traffic problems throughout Southcentral. According to Mat-Su Borough spokeswoman Patty Sullivan, three school buses went off the road, including one that rolled onto its side. Three students and the driver were transported to Mat-Su Regional for minor injuries. At least two accidents involving semis were also reported at Mile 49 and 55 of the Parks Highway. Parts various roads were closed throughout the day, and dozens of accidents were reported.
According to a statement by Catherine Esary, spokeswoman for the school district, some roads had remained impassable to buses until the afternoon. She said that the Borough’s Public Works Department had been sanding throughout the day, and that many of the worst roads were state, not Borough, maintained.
