Talkeetna Elementary School PTA Treasurer Niki Weaver reported that the school had been awarded a Farm to School grant, and received a gift of a hydroponic grow station to enable the school to grow their own produce for the salad bar. A similar project in Whittier has been very successful, and Talkeetna Elementary PTA hopes to get a larger system of tanks, water pumps, and grow lights that could be a self-sustaining source of produce. The hydroponics station could also be incorporated in to school curriculum, Weaver says.Weaver also reported that the Annual Holiday Bazaar which took place on December 1st was more successful than last year, and that vendors did very well, and the PTA earned a sizable sum to put towards its programs, such as Farm-to-School, healthy snacks, and the salad Bar.
Talkeetna Elementary school’s book fair raised $1,100 dollars for the library, according to Principal Carol Wadman’s report to the PTA on December 10th. The money will be used to purchase non-fiction books for the library.
