Ice Jams back water up into vicinity of town - ponding water fills sloughs at end of Main St

High waters on the Susitna river continue to be monitored, as an Ice Jam has driven water into the sloughs just east of Main Street.

According to Assistant Fire Chief Erik Denkewalter, a measurement of the high water was taken at the end of main street at three pm on Wednesday, and by 8 pm Wednesday night the water had risen four inches. Unofficial measurements made by KTNA at 6:30 this morning indicate the water has come up an additional 8 inches at the same location over night, and is now roughly 1 foot below the end of the parking area at river front park.

The water level at the Talkeetna Boat launch upriver from the confluence of the Talkeetna and Susitna rivers appears to have dropped several inches over night. However, the Susitna river at the end of the village air strip also appears to have gone up over night, rising 8 inches between 9 pm Wednesday and 6:30 am this morning. There is little visible movement of water at any of the locations visited this morning.

Emergency management will continue to monitor the situation through the day.
