After seventeen months of construction, the new Mat-Su Central facility nears completion. The new facility’s ribbon cutting ceremony will take place April 4th, 2025.
According to Matanuska-Susitna School District Superintendent Dr. Randy Trani, the building will provide students with more in-person classes, clubs, and workshops as soon as this Spring.
He added that the new facility aims to accommodate more hybrid/in-person learning options for students in the district who want it. He said that giving students more choices could increase enrollment.
However, changes to Mat-Su Central might not end with just a new building. Dr. Trani said they are also trying to get approval for a new school code for the Mat-Su Hybrid Learning Academy. The current code dictates the district receives the same amount of money for Mat-Su Central students whether or not they take part in in-person learning. According to Dr. Trani, the new code could change that and open the door for more funding.
“From a student’s perspective, nothing is going to change,” he said, “Except for we hope to offer more opportunities for hybrid learning.”
While the school board endorsed the school code change in early February, Dr. Trani said they are now waiting for final approval from the state.
