This past Thursday, Mat-Su Borough Mayor Edna DeVries filed a letter of intent to run for Governor in 2026. While the letter is only the first step to raising money for a possible campaign, DeVries said she is ninety percent sure she will run.
Born in 1941, Edna DeVries was elected mayor of the Mat-Su Borough in 2021. She served as mayor of the city of Palmer for a number of years, as well as served on the Alaska senate in the 1980s.
DeVries said that with Governor Dunleavy’s term expiring and the Trump administration’s focus on Alaska’s resources, she believes now is the optimal time to run.
“I think just taking advantage of some of the support from people in the higher levels, as well as the people that develop the resources in not only our country, the United States, but also in the world,” she said.
While a campaign would be a ways away, DeVries added she would focus on “education, election transparency, and listening to people” in her possible campaign.
