Sled dog racing, or mushing, has a long history in the Upper Susitna Valley. The inaugural Su Dog 300, a new race, is set for January 25th, 2025.
Board Chair Tre-C Dumais (Tray-See DOO-may) says the event will likely start in Willow and head north toward Trapper Creek. While race directors have not solidified the exact route, it will likely follow the west side of the Parks Highway and loop back to Willow for a total of about 300 miles.
The race is an effort to train new mushers and focus on quality dog care, community, and fun. There is no purse for the race, but it is an Iditatrod qualifier. All entry fees will help to pay for setting up the event. Dumais and her team are also working to get sponsorships.
Depending on weather conditions, the race is likely to run about 48 to 72 hours. Race registrations will be capped at 20 teams. Race enthusiasts will be able to track the teams on the event website.
The race route and other details are expected in September. Registration will open October 15th. The website for the event is SU-DOG-300 dot O-R-G.
