Parks Alternative Corridor Study Moves Forward

At an Open House in late May, the State Department of Transportation and Public Facilities shared the remaining routes for the Parks Highway Alternatives study. The study will help determine the best route or routes for easing congestion, among other goals, along the Parks Highway in Wasilla.

After the last round of public comment and study, the team selected three options to study further, plus the no-build option. Three proposed lines that intersect and collectively follow similar routes will advance together. Those routes parallel the Parks Highway about one to one-and-a-half miles to the south. Pieces of each would be needed to complete the new route to avoid sensitive habitat and consider development.

The Orange Route roughly parallels the Parks highway about one to one-and-a-half miles south. The route is fairly straight and would use Fairview Loop Road at the east end and joins with Johnsons Road at the west. This segment is through mostly undeveloped land.

The Yellow Route is a combination of existing roads and undeveloped land. The east end would start at the Hyer Road Interchange and end at milepost 52.5 on the Parks Highway at the west end. This section would include portions of Fairview Loop Road and Hollywood Road. Roughly paralleling the Parks Highway, it would route drivers two-and-a-half to three miles south.

Comments on the remaining segments will be accepted through June 30. Following this comment period, the project team will be refining the options and developing a draft study to help determine final routes for design.
