Summer Erosion Brings Water Line Work
The project included installing a water valve, removing two fire hydrants, and installing a new hydrant in front of Susitna River Lodge
Talkeetna Water and Sewer began work Monday morning to terminate a water main in a southern section of the Spur Road. The water line stretches across the Spur to the railroad crossing.
This work precedes a project the Department of Transportation, or DOT, plans to carry out to stabilize the bank in the right-of-way.
Talkeetna Water and Sewer Supervisor Amanda Fleming said that, because erosion worsened this past summer, the line was too close to the river. Their work helped reduce the risk of water being cut off for both downtown and East Talkeetna.
As of Thursday, three customers lost service and are looking into alternative water sources, such as drilling wells. Other affected customers now have access to water but are under a boil notice.
Fleming also said the project included installing a water valve, removing two fire hydrants, and installing a new hydrant in front of Susitna River Lodge. Crews are currently working to finalize the project.
