Contractors will begin cleaning and inspecting the sewer system in Talkeetna beginning May 28th.
Amanda Fleming, Mat-Su Borough Utilities and Facilities Operational Supervisor for Talkeetna says the work should not impact community members. The goal of the cleaning and inspections is to determine if there are assets that need repairs or replacements. It is part of the normal maintenance conducted every five to ten years.
The equipment used for the cleaning process, which are high-pressure jets, will be loud. Contractors will begin on Main Street and North Alley and then move east.
Mat-Su Borough Public Works Engineer Mike Campfield says everything will flush down to the pump station at G Street and then be pumped to the wastewater treatment plant. The contractors will pump solids to a truck.
Campfield and Fleming say there will be orange cones around the manholes as they are opened. Residents should be aware that the crew will open six to eight manholes per day and clear 1,500 to 2,500 feet per day. In all, the crews will clear more than 24,000 linear feet of pipes. Work zones will be clearly marked and manholes will be recovered each day.
Work will run daily from 7 am to 5 pm. The Borough intends to finish the work within three weeks. Residents can report any issues or concerns to Amanda Fleming at amanda.fleming@matsugov.us.
