In early 2024, the Upper Susitna Community and Senior Center received five million dollars from the federal government to fund expansions to their facilities. Almost one year later, Executive Director of the Upper Susitna Community & Senior Center Kevin O’Connor announced the center is ready to take the next steps toward construction.
Amidst concerns regarding access to federal funding, O’Connor said he spoke with the Department of Housing and Urban Development in Anchorage, confirming funding for the project is secure.
According to O’Conner, the expanded facilities will include adding classrooms and showers to the main building, building a laundromat equipped with showers, and building housing for some of the Upper Valley’s seniors.
Currently, no timeline has been established for when construction will begin. O’Connor said there’s a long list of permits and paperwork to complete first.
O’Connor hopes the center will start construction by the end of the year.
